Daniel J. Schaeffler, Ph.D. - President and Chief Executive Officer Danny received his Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Materials Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. While at Drexel, Danny held engineering and research positions with the David Taylor Research Center (Annapolis, MD) and Hoeganaes Corporation (Riverton, NJ). After receiving his Doctorate, Danny started at the LTV Steel Technology Center (Independence, OH), where he was a member of the Customer Technical Center, focused on customer-based problem solving in the areas of corrosion, formability, and surface contaminants. He then transferred into the Automotive Development Group, focused on formability analysis and training; materials selection and optimization; tooling development and production launches for new vehicle programs; customer materials & manufacturing cost reduction efforts; forming/denting/structural computer simulation; and technical awareness and communications with the automotive manufacturers and their Tier One / Tier Two companies. Danny's first position in the ADG was as the engineer responsible for all transplant accounts, and then moved to having responsibility for the Ford Motor account, before being promoted to the Group Manager. During his time with LTV Steel, Danny was active in AISI and Auto/Steel Partnership activities, serving as Chairman of the Standardized Dent Resistance Test Project as well as participating in other committees. Danny is the founding member of Engineering Quality Solutions, Inc. Danny has over a dozen publications and is a member of ASM International, SAE International, and is the Vice President of the North American Deep Drawing Research Group (www.NADDRG.org).
Dennis Bishop, Ph.D. - Applications Engineer Dennis received a
Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy from The Pennsylvania State University,
a Master of Engineering degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Metallurgical
Engineering from
His
first job after graduate school was at Olin Metals Research Laboratories, where
he developed a new product for the company’s aluminum conductor wire business.
Then, Dennis started a 30-year career with an emphasis on sheet metal
forming. Evenly divided between work
for a metal supplier and a metal stamping company, his experience provides
valuable understanding of both perspectives. The
first 15 years was at United States Steel Corporation with successive positions
in their Applied Research Laboratory, Headquarters Sheet Product Metallurgy
department, and their Product Applications Group.
Research activities included the characterization of the press
formability of hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel sheet and supervision of
research on the effect of deformation mode on the mechanical properties of steel
sheet after forming. As one of the
original members of the USS automotive applications group, Dennis worked with
customers – chiefly Ford and Chrysler – in tooling development programs.
He also served for a period of time on site at a General Motors stamping
plant supporting plant activities, investigating customer rejections and
resolving claims. The
next 15 years was spent as a member of the ThyssenKrupp Budd Company’s
technical center. Dennis provided
metallurgical support and technology transfer to manufacturing operations and
solved forming problems in stamping plants producing body panels and frame
components. He also conducted
research on the formability of steel and aluminum sheet and on measurement of
body panel surface imperfections. During
a 16-month assignment at the company’s Dennis
has had training and practical experience in both Shainin problem solving
techniques and Six Sigma. He
participated in the development and writing of a sheet steel formability manual
published by the American Iron & Steel Institute.
In addition to teaching strain analysis techniques for his own employers,
Dennis has conducted classes at the request of one of the major automotive
companies for engineers from their sheet metal suppliers.
He has also been an active member of the North American Deep Drawing
Research Group.
Evan J. Vineberg, Ph.D. - Applications Engineer Evan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from UCLA; and after earning a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from UCLA, spent two years in the U.S. Public Health Service evaluating nuclear power plant safety issues and siting considerations. Following this government service, he earned a Ph.D. from UCLA in Metallurgical Engineering. Concurrent with his thesis research, Evan worked for Applied Nucleonics Co., providing radiological, seismic and structural consulting services, and for the Association of Scientific Advisers, performing forensic metallurgical testing and evaluation, high temperature corrosion testing, fracture analyses, and metallographic and scanning electron microscopy investigations. Evan also served on a Special Assignment with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency addressing Radioactive Waste Management national policy issues. After receiving his Doctorate, Evan worked for the AMAX Materials Research Center as a Research Metallurgist, focusing on alloy development programs for steam tubing, pressure vessel and oil field tubing applications. In addition, he was responsible for a wide range of industry support services focused on mechanical testing and materials processing/characterization. After nearly a decade with AMAX, Evan spent almost 2 decades in the integrated steel industry, first with LTV Steel then with AK Steel, focused on carbon and stainless steel applications for new vehicle development programs. In this capacity, he was responsible for the full scope of tooling development, tryout, and launch activities. These included all the efforts he supports with Engineering Quality Solutions: material grade selection and optimization for part-specific applications, stamping process robustness assessments, vehicle launch support, production stamping trouble-shooting, quality improvement projects, and cost-savings programs. Evan spent a number of years in-residence at the General Motors Technical Center supporting the Die Engineering and Sheet Metal communities, and has been active in AISI and Auto/Steel Partnership projects.
J. David Grozier, Ph.D – Senior Consultant Dave received his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Purdue University and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology. He joined Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation (J & L) in Pittsburgh, PA, in the Research Laboratory where he worked on the early development of HSLA Steels. He was Chief Metallurgist at J & L’s Pittsburgh Works and Quality Control Manager at J & L’s Aliquippa Works in Pittsburgh, PA. After J & L became LTV Steel Company, Dave was transferred to Detroit, MI, where he joined the LTV Steel Automotive Development Group. Prior to joining Engineering Quality Solutions, Dave worked most recently on LTV’s new car programs with DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, and BMW, focusing on tooling development and vehicle production launches. Dave's expertise includes sheet metal formability and strain analysis evaluations of formed parts to assess the suitability of the tooling/process/sheet metal combination to form safe, robust panels in stamping plant production operations.
John Hiam - Technical Consultant John Hiam obtained his degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, from Aston University in the United Kingdom. He worked for two years in the British automotive industry on the metal stamping side of the business and was involved in press shop trouble shooting and many die try out exercises. He emigrated to Canada in 1968 and has been involved with the steel industry since then. He spent 13 years with Dofasco/Algoma where rose to General Manager of Quality Control, 10 years with Inland Steel where he was Assistant Director of Research & Manager of Product Applications, and 10 years with LTV Steel where he led Product Development, his final position being Senior Director. John spent most of his early years working on sheet metal formability, fatigue of sheet metals and high strength steel development and has written several papers on each of these subjects. During his later years he led steel applications development activities, tin plate, hot rolled, cold rolled & galvanized steel quality improvement teams and quality control which included customer technical service activities. John has been very active in professional societies, having been secretary & vice president of the North American Deep Drawing Research Group, Secretary of the Materials Engineering Section of the Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and Chairman of the Flat Rolled Products Committee of the Mechanical Working Division of the Iron & Steel Society. His expertise includes formability, fatigue, metallurgy of production of sheet steel products including hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized (electrogalvanized & hot dip products), electrical steels & tinplate & quality management.
Edmund A. Herman - Technical Consultant Ed Herman, President of Creative Concepts Company, is a technical consultant to Engineering Quality Solutions, and is a Professional Engineer registered in the State of Michigan. Ed worked at General Motors for nearly 4 decades before retiring. His primary focus was in new process development in the areas of molding sheet molding compounds and draw die development for sheet metal stamping dies. Ed was instrumental in the shift from physical plaster developments to total CAD design of sheet metal draw die developments within General Motors. He has taught continuing education courses on die casting, stamping and injection molding through Oakland and Wayne State Universities. He is the author of several textbooks and magazine articles for Society of Die Casting Engineers (SDCE) and the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA). Ed holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from General Motors Institute and Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering-Operations Research from the University of Michigan. In addition to his activities in SDCE and NADCA, Ed is active in the North American Deep Drawing Research Group (NADDRG).
Asoke Nandy - Technical Consultant Asoke
Nandy is a technical consultant to Engineering Quality Solutions, and is a Tool
& Die stamping specialist. He began his technical education in Since
retiring from Ford, Asoke has worked with the DaimlerChrysler Toledo Machining
Plant, where his troubleshooting enabled him to achieve an improved acceptance
rate by making modifications to torque converters, and well as with the Visteon
Monroe ( Asoke has extensive knowledge and practical experience in trying out new dies, improving processes, and creating high quality cost effective solutions. He firmly believes that the intricacies he has learned in the areas of aluminum and steel formability, metal savings, process robustness and springback management must be taught to others to ensure continued success by companies in the manufacturing industries.
Phil Luedtke - Technical Consultant Phil
Luedtke is a technical consultant to Engineering Quality Solutions, and is a
stamping process specialist. Phil received a Bachelor of Science degree in
Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Systems Design from Upon
graduation from Lawrence Tech, Phil started at the Cadillac Motor Car Division
of General Motors in the Die and Metal Fabrication Group. He spent one
year in the Troy Engineering office before he took an assignment with the Grand
Blanc Stamping Plant, where he worked as a Supervisor for the Tool and Die
Department, and also as a tooling engineer responsible for die construction and
buy off. After a few years of the “Plant Life,” Phil transferred to
Saturn and worked in the Advanced Manufacturing Group as a Senior Manufacturing
Engineer. His responsibilities were to work closely with the Product
Designers and Engineers to ensure a manufacturable and cost effective design.
After 9 years with General Motors, Phil joined LTV Steel’s Automotive Development Group. Phil worked on cost savings projects for several automotive customers, participating in and leading the teams that uncovered multi-million dollar savings resulting from alternative manufacturing approaches, which frequently had the additional benefit of taking weight out of the vehicles. He also was able to resolve forming and stamping issues for numerous automotive and non-automotive customers, eliminating breakage and increasing press uptime. Since LTV folded, Phil continues to consult on challenging forming issues.
Lee Pepper - Technical Consultant Lee started his 35 year career at with General Motors in the Oldsmobile Division in Lansing, MI. Shortly after hiring in, Lee completed an apprenticeship in Machine Repair, then was promoted to maintenance supervisor covering machining, plating and stamping areas at the various sites in Lansing. He was later transferred to Die Engineering as an automation engineer, responsible for front of line blank washing and handling, automation arm development for Danly pick and place automation and other part handling operations. Lee was later selected to be one of the first Die Engineers to be trained in Die Face Engineering at General Motors. After completing the training he became involved in Die Face Development for the 92N (Grand Am / Regal / Alero) and 95J (Cavalier / Sunfire) programs along with finite element analysis of the forming process. After a short assignment working with the prototype segment at General Motors Parts Fabrication Operation, he was transferred to Die Management Group to be the Analysis Group Manager. Under his leadership this team developed into one of the leading groups in the automotive industry by helping the analyst understand that their models had to match what was happening in the work place and giving solutions to problems that truly worked and could be understood by the die maker. The assignment also included developing the buyoff curve process, the matching draw-in process and becoming a Beta test site working relationship with ESI Corporation for Pamstamp. This assignment was followed with other assignments in Die Engineering including Formability Manager, Structures Module Manager, and Manager of Engineering Change and Blank Nesting. Lee has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Michigan State University and is a retired U.S. Army Military Police Colonel with service in Desert Storm.
