As reported by MEPS, the 2007 global steel output is estimated to be 1.350 billion metric tons, an 8% increase over the 1.249 billion metric tons produced in 2006. The 1 billionth metric ton is projected to have been produced on September 27, 2007, the 270th day of the year. This is about 7.5 weeks earlier than in 2005.
